The 17th round of the 2019 season is well underway with Free Practice Friday hours away. Rain or shine, riders will ease into the weekend and soon be battling for Q1 vs Q2 positions.
Phillip Island is expected to be a bit rainy Friday and Saturday before clearing up for a partly cloudy race day. We can expect similar conditions to last week’s race that took place in Japan as we saw both wet and slick tires out on the circuit.
With cooler circuit temperatures expected due to cloud coverage and lack of radiation reaching Earth’s surface, tire choice will be tricky as grip and tire wear separate those who land on the podium, and those who don’t.
Each rider brings a unique style to the circuit and each bike must be approached differently from the one in the next garage over. A rider’s technique can be (somewhat) easily identified as we observe what tires they throw on for race day, their movement through the pack in the 1st half vs the 2nd half and their lines taken going into each turn.
Stay tuned and stay dry!
