After winning his 7th Championship title. Marc Marquez heads into the 2019 season with the Repsol Honda Team ready to defend his title. If you’ve followed Marquez from his debut in MotoGP back in 2013, you know his riding style has matured right alongside him. From being a young, fast yet unpredictable rider who carried an “invincible” mindset, to a rider with unmatched sector times and an almost perfectly linear improvement in sector time consistency, we’re excited to see what he brings to the table in 2019.
Below we have provided graphs tracking both his average speed index as well as his average consistency index over time. These graphs represent an annual average with all races combined for the past 5 years. If you are unfamiliar with our indexes, a rider’s speed index is calculated from sector times for every circuit of every race. A rider’s consistency index quantifies their ability to keep consistency sector times on a lap by lap basis. For both indexes, a smaller value = faster sector times with little variation (high consistency).
Marquez has remained with Repsol Honda for all 5 fives of analysis.
What do we hope to see from Marquez as he flies into the 2019 season? We hope to see a continuation of his historical linear improvement in consistency as we see this as his greatest challenge. It is no secret that he has some of the fastest times across all the circuits, so if he can maintain his improved speeds from 2018 and match that with more consistent sector times, we believe he will continue to lead the pack and this time, be able to pull ahead more often.
